On a recent FB thread, a conversation started between me, Paul Simpson and Les Glover about my school band Desmond's Leg.The band was named after an "instrument" (The Leg) which was basically an early form of rudimentary synth, built by an electronics-whizz school mate.A long pole had metal conductive rods up each side, and if you applied enough graphite (from a pencil) all the way up the pole, and then ran your fingers up and down (making the connection), you could get it to make a sort of theremin/police siren sound, ideal for doing The Sweet's "Blockbuster" song.Amazingly, when Les and I were emptying my loft the other year when we sold our house, there it was! I'd forgotten all about it.Pics of this fabulous instrument below, plus Desmond's Leg in action 1972, me giving it some hair action on guitar, on the left.Desmond's Leg "meat and potato" repertoire consisted of things like Virginia Plain, Alright Now, Brown Sugar, My Generation, Get Down Get With It, She's a Woman, Paper Plane etc and the aforemention Blockbuster sequeing cleverly into Bowie's Jean Jeanie.Happy days.
